The Wind Rider
The Wind Rider
When I was little
My tribal people told me
The wind has its color:wind talks
The wind is our ancestor'feet
It steps quietly into the village
And take away people deceased in a sleep
My tama[1]
The worms'singing in forest
Fawns resting at night
All turn into wind in deep sleep
I try hard to search for the trace of the wind
Yet its color not detectable
Its voice unheard
Like an eagle I spread my wings
And inspect under my eyes the land of my father
From where ancestral knees[2] are
And seeing those migration days one after another
In Central Mountain my tama
During Japanese occupation
Hunted abundant preys in the mountains.
Under Kuomingtang government, then
He had been searching for jungle
In basins and city
In East Rift Valley
My tama pointed his arrow to the naked sun
Wearing a costume decorated with? weaving pattern
Meanwhile, a large applause rose, as large as the forest
I descend in front of the coffin
The wind lightly blows around my face
Ihear tama follow the footsteps of the wind
Soring far and high towards the ancestral resting place.
Trans by Shuhwa
[1] In the Bwnun langnage,tama meens“father”.
[2] Metaphorical reference to middle altitude of mountains.
